2024-25 COACHING STAFF

Varsity Coach Joseph Pendell
Coach Pendell is extremely excited for his first season as the Dawgs Head Coach and thrilled to be a part of the vision for Bulldog Nation. Along with 14 years of head coaching experience he brings a tough and together philosophy on basketball that promotes the 3 B’s of Being on Time, Being Your Best, and Being Accountable.
Coach grew up in Norwood, Massachusetts and is a graduate of Norwood High School. He is a Boston sports fan across the board but has accepted a few Texas sports teams into his fandom as well. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Western Illinois University and a Master’s degree from Concordia University Irvine.
The 24/25 school year marks his 15th season as a Head Basketball Coach in Austin. The first 10 years at Lanier (now Navarro) produced 8 trips to the playoffs, and the school’s first district championship in 30 years.
The past four at LASA include starting up the basketball program and back-to-back trips to the playoffs. During that time, his teams have collected over 200 wins, produced players to go on to all levels of college basketball,and more importantly outstanding young men of character and grit.
He and his wife Liz are extremely proud parents of their two fantastic children Marlo (16) and Will (15).

JV Coach Nate Haynes III
Coach Haynes is a fifth-generation educator and son of a State Champion Coach of the Year (Dad) and a retired publishing executive (Mom). He is a Bowie graduate and began teaching and coaching various sports at AISD in 2007 (Bowie since 2022), winning multiple district championships at the freshman and JV levels. Coach Haynes also founded Professionals Sharing Opportunities (PSO), a non-profit charity that offers opportunities for youth and communities to learn from professionals in many different fields (including sports, business, and more). Assistant Coach Bret Atkins
Coach Atkins is in his second season at Bowie High School. Prior to Bowie, Coach Atkins spent six years as an assistant coach at the high school level and has also worked as a graduate assistant coach at East Texas Baptist University.

JV Coach
Nate Haynes III

Assistant Coach Dion Vickers
Coach Vickers joins Bowie Basketball while also serving as an Assistant Coach for Bowie Football. This is his seventh year as a Bowie Special Education teacher. Born and raised in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Coach Vickers attended Sterling College in Sterling, Kansas, receiving his B.A. in Communications. He was a two-sport athlete at the NAIA college, playing both football and basketball. His coaching career spans more than 20 years, during which time he has coached numerous middle school boys and varsity boys and girls basketball teams, mainly in the Oklahoma City area. Coach Vickers is a father of two adult children, Dion and Victoria, and grandfather of 6-year-old Malia.

Assistant Coach Jesus Martinez
Coach Martinez enters his first season at Bowie as a freshman coach and is excited to join the program. This is his 2nd season coaching at the high school level as well as his 3rd year with the district as a PE coach at Sunset Valley Elementary.

Assistant Coach Bret Atkins
Coach Atkins is in his second season at Bowie High School. Prior to Bowie, Coach Atkins spent six years as an assistant coach at the high school level and has also worked as a graduate assistant coach at East Texas Baptist University.

Coach Atkins played college basketball at Southwestern Oklahoma State University and East Texas Baptist University. He and his wife, Dana, have two children, Kate and Ray.
